Phonics Teaching Games : Splat
Splat is a fun classroom/carpet based activity that is ideal for a warm up and revision of sounds. Children play in two teams and one member from each team is given a fly swatter. With a selection of sounds or words clearly displayed on the carpet or stuck to the board, then teacher calls out the sound or word for the children to find and ‘swat’ as quickly as they can. This is lots of fun and is best played at pace, with the fly swatter being handed to the next team member as soon as the turn in over.
The teams may be awarded points or may be given the card for being the fastest.
The game can easily be differentiated by ability within the same group. The teacher would simply pair similar ability children to play against each other. This would allow the addition of word cards or more advanced sounds whilst easier sound sets are used with less able children.
